The action of “liking” an action or experience of a friend is now commoditized by Facebook. It has become extremely easy to express empathy for one’s contacts on Facebook. To me this means that it is extremely easy to express no emotion, especially with the prevalance of brands™ on the site. To “like” a status can now mean to both encourage as well as empathize.
In response to the slippery slope I feel that “like” is on, I’ve created a Chrome extension that when activated will click like on every Facebook post that the user sees.
Originally created in 2012 very soon after I rejoined Facebook, this project was revived and the code was fixed after Mat Honan liked everything he saw manually.
